Fiona Deffenbaugh is the designer behind Black Pearl. Of Scottish/American heritage, she was born in Cairo but grew up in Glasgow, before moving to London to study photography. What started as a hobby collecting, making and selling jewellery at London’s vibrant markets became a full time job and inspired Fiona to design her own range.
Inspired by ancient symbols, superstitions, belief systems, talismans, magic, mystery and mortality, the collection comprises of pendants that can be bought individually or combined to make your own personalised necklace.
All Black Pearl jewellery is made of sterling silver or 18ct gold plated silver. Everything is made here in London using small, local manufacturing companies, and finished by hand in Hatton Garden (the jewellery district).
‘I wanted to design jewellery that was easy to wear, that had a sense of history, but was modern at the same time. I didn’t want it to be too feminine or masculine, it could just be worn by anyone who related to it. I’ve seen first hand through selling at markets in East London how people like to make their own combinations to suit their personal style, which is why all of the pendants and chains are sold separately and come in a variety of sizes and finishes, and earrings are sold singly or in a pair, it just makes sense’
